About Martine Letoile

Martine Letoile

I first started to paint in the late nineties. At that time I was able to experiment with all kinds of textured mediums, one being wax, preferably paraffin wax, since it sticks to the canvas well. Working in this medium has helped me let the process find itself. I only have a certain amount of control with melted wax and it dictates where the flow of the painting will go. I categorize myself as an deconstructionist because I like to build up the surface and then tear it down by stripping away the wax to leave an exposed piece of canvas. With the raw part of the canvas showing, it contrasts itself against a slick, smooth, richly painted surface. This technique gives way to a burst of light coming from within the painting where it is seen...
